Nicaragua finishes in seventh position

MAYAGUEZ, Puerto Rico, July 23, 2010 – Nicaragua finished in seventh position in the women’s volleyball tournament of the XXI Central American Games after a 3-0 (25-19, 25-21, 25-20) victory over Barbados.

Bertha Fierro scored 18 points to lead the winning side while Amalia Hernandez and Hellen Traña added 13 and 10 points respectively. Shari Matthews registered 11 tallies for the defeated side.

“We are satisfied with this victory and with the learning experience of playing against teams of a superior level,” Nicaraguan coach Rene Quintana said. “Today’s match was a very close one as the sets’ score reflects.”

“I hope this experience will help our team for the Caribbean Championship,” Barbados’ coach Andrew Bratwaite said. “We need to have a strong show in that tournament in order to continue taking part in NORCECA events.”
